David Harris speaks to a live audience

I'm going to start by showing you an interesting piece of video. And this was taken by a hidden camera in an orthodontic office in Ohio. And it involves this woman, Marianne Schaefer. It's called the disappearing $500. A patient will pay $500 in an envelope. And let's watch what Marianne does with it. So she went to the restroom with the money and when she came back it was gone. And for stealing that $500 and about another $130,000. Mary Ann became a guest of the state of Ohio for two years. There's another part to the story. Every embezzlement has two components, which I call the steal and the conceal. What you saw there was the steal. That's where the doctor's money became her money. The concealment part happens when something is done in the practice management software to hide the fact that the money was taken. Let's ask the relevance question here. Is this something that will affect a small corner of dentistry, or is it kind of a mainstream problem? The numbers I'm going to show you came from a study the American Dental Association did in 2019. And they asked 19,000 dentists a very simple question, have you been stolen from Let's start with the good news, which is that 53% said, as far as I know, I haven't been. And I'm sure you can appreciate that this question doesn't always lend itself to absolute answers. You know what's coming. The other 47% said, yes, I have been. The ADA asked that 47% another question. How many times? And now it gets a little bit interesting. So 26%, in other words, about half of those who said yes said, one time as far as I know. We have 11% who had been stolen from twice. 2% were the triple dippers. And the one that really makes me scratch my head is that 8% of dentists in the survey had been stolen from, yes, at least four times. So this is a very mainstream problem. It's going to hit most practices sooner or later.
