Joyce Sakach, 74, of Racine, Wisconsin (WI) was charged with five felony counts in connection with an alleged scheme to steal and defraud a Mount Pleasant orthodontics firm for which she performed bookkeeping. Prosecutors allege Sakach diverted approximately $680,000 from the practice over time. The case demonstrates that apparent trustworthiness and seniority do not eliminate embezzlement risk — sound internal controls must be independent of personal trust.
The unique payment structures, treatment contracts, and trust placed in front-office staff make orthodontic practices especially vulnerable. Prosperident specializes in orthodontic embezzlement investigations and prevention.
