Karen Seguin, an employee at the oral surgery practice of Brian K. Smith, DDS, MD, Inc., in Lakewood, Ohio (OH), was charged with eight felony counts after she allegedly used her office key to enter the practice after hours and steal fentanyl, replacing the contents of the vials with saline to conceal the theft.

According to court documents, Seguin conducted the thefts between July 21 and August 21, entering the practice four to five times during that period. She was arrested by Lakewood Police on August 22. The charges included two counts of theft, four counts of tampering with drugs, and two counts of breaking and entering. Fentanyl is a Schedule II controlled substance that is at least 30 times more potent than heroin, and the substitution of saline for the drug in clinical vials posed a significant patient safety risk.
