Kristine Taufer of Provo, Utah was charged with embezzling hundreds of thousands of dollars from three separate employers — including a dental practice — through a scheme involving forged checks and the direct deposit of stolen funds into bank accounts. Her husband, Pleasant Grove Police Lieutenant James Taufer, maintained he was entirely unaware of his wife's activities across the more than 20 years he served as a law enforcement officer.

Investigators noted, however, that a portion of the stolen funds had been deposited into accounts held in Lieutenant Taufer's name and that certain fraudulent checks bore his name as well. Victims of the scheme publicly questioned his professed ignorance of the ongoing fraud.
