Sharon Swartz, 58, a long-time office manager for a dental practice in Hamlin, Pennsylvania, was charged by State Police with retaining more than $13,000 in insurance reimbursements that belonged to the practice. Long-tenured employees with unmonitored access to insurance receivables represent a frequently underestimated embezzlement risk that independent review can help address.

Update: Guilty Plea and Jail Sentence

Wayne County court records show Swartz pleaded guilty on August 9, 2012 to third-degree felony theft by unlawful taking (Commonwealth v. Sharon G. Swartz, CP-64-CR-0000079-2012). Judge Raymond L. Hamill sentenced her the same day to 3 to 23 months of confinement, a $500 fine, and restitution — the docket’s ledger shows nearly $19,500 in restitution assessed and fully paid.
