Shobhit Garg, a contracted worker serving as a Class II administrative staff member at the Government Dental College and Hospital in Jamnagar, Gujarat, India, has been booked for allegedly embezzling Rs 1.36 crore (approximately $160,000 USD) in funds meant for patient welfare and outsourced workers’ pay over a five-month period.
Garg was entrusted with administrative record-keeping for the hospital’s Rogi Kalyan Samiti — the patient welfare committee — which administered a dedicated bank account for patient welfare funds and outsourced workers’ salaries. According to police, between November 18, 2025 and April 2, 2026, Garg cleared 15 cheques drawn on the samiti’s bank account and diverted the proceeds into his own personal bank account rather than routing them to the intended recipients.
The scheme came to light on May 16, 2026, when a bank manager noticed unusually large credits flowing into Garg’s personal account and informed a local doctor, Dr Kanusagar, who alerted the dean of the dental college. The dean and a committee of senior doctors summoned Garg for questioning. His replies were evasive, prompting the administration to obtain the relevant bank statements, which confirmed that 15 transactions totalling Rs 1.36 crore had been diverted to Garg’s personal account.
An FIR was registered against Garg by the Jamnagar City B Division police following a complaint by Dr Sanjay Umraniya, a Class II tutor at the college. Police subsequently summoned Garg and the bank statements documented the full extent of the misappropriation.
The losses are estimated at Rs 1.36 crore (approximately $160,000 USD), representing funds intended for patient welfare programs and the pay of outsourced hospital workers.
