Tammy Murphy Chancey, 39, of Enterprise, Alabama (AL) was arrested after police determined she had stolen more than $100,000 from the dental practice of Dr. Kenneth W. Chancey — to whom she was married at the time the thefts occurred. The case illustrates that spousal access to practice finances presents embezzlement risk that standard employment controls do not always address, particularly when one partner has unrestricted access to the other’s business accounts.
The unique payment structures, treatment contracts, and trust placed in front-office staff make orthodontic practices especially vulnerable. Prosperident specializes in orthodontic embezzlement investigations and prevention.
