Financial Independence -- What Does it Mean for a Dental Practice?

As we just celebrated Independence Day with backyard barbecues, fireworks, and time spent with family and friends, it is worth considering another type of independence — financial independence within your practice. While fireworks are expected in the sky every July, financial fireworks inside a dental practice are something entirely different.
Unfortunately, financial warning signs often remain hidden until they become a significant problem. By the time the “explosion” occurs, whether it is embezzlement, declining profitability, uncontrolled adjustments, or insurance reimbursement issues, the damage has often been occurring quietly for months or even years.

For many dentists, summer is a bit slower. Hopefully it gives you some time for reflection and to make your plans for the fall.
Something I'd like you to consider in your planning is our amazing proactive product, called Owner Proactive Strategies. As you probably know, for the first 20 years of its existence, Prosperident was purely an investigation company -- dentists who had found or suspected embezzlement came to us to perform investigations, help them recover money, and to take the people who stole from them out of circulation.
A turning point came when we performed an investigation for a dentist and the victim, who was understandably unhappy with what had happened to him, said to me, "I don't think you are using your talents fully. You know the weaknesses that embezzlers exploit. Instead of just reacting when embezzlement happens, why don't you use that knowledge to help dentists protect themselves before they become victims?"
His observation made complete sense to me, and marked the beginning of what has helped hundreds of dentists drastically reduce their embezzlement risk.
So what does OPS entail? It is a combination of strutural controls (an example is division of duties between team members) and one-on-one training for practice owners on how to oversee the revenue side of their practice. The result is to make a practice owner comfortable in their role as the financial overseer of their practice.
